Government
Formed from the the town of Salem, settled in 1766 by the Moravian
Church, and Winston, founded in 1849, the city of Winston-Salem was an
industrial town that thrived on the production of tobacco products,
furniture and textile manufacturing. In the mid-1800's it was designated as
the county of seat of Forsyth County.
Winston-Salem is perhaps best known for Wake Forest University, Camel
cigarettes (produced by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company), Wachovia
Corporation (now located in Charlotte, NC) and Old Salem Historic District,
a living history museum within the restored Moravian community of Salem.
